Cal OES Hosting Statewide Great California ShakeOut Tour and Earthquake Drill

Great California ShakeOut Tour: October 12-20

Building upon California’s leadership to implement a first-in-the-nation earthquake alert system and encouraging Californians to be earthquake prepared, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is hosting a statewide tour with an earthquake simulation trailer, known as the Great California ShakeOut Tour.

Cal OES and other local and state partners are visiting six cities statewide from October 12 – 20 to provide life-saving earthquake preparedness tips, all while featuring a simulator that offers a real-life sense of an earthquake.

The earthquake simulator provides users the opportunity to experience simulated shaking intensity, similar to that caused by magnitude 7.0 earthquakes. For more information on the tour, please visit news.caloes.ca.gov.

MyShake Earthquake Test Notification: October 20

Then, on October 20, when millions of Californians will be participating in an earthquake drill, MyShake smartphone app users will receive a test notification encouraging users to practice Drop, Cover and Hold On in the event of an earthquake.

The test drill will have an audible tone along with verbal messaging in English that says, “This is a test of the earthquake warning system, no action required.” The test drill will not go out over the fast earthquake early alerting pathway, so participants may not receive it directly at 10:20 am.

Only participants that have at one time shared location services and are still active in the MyShake app cache, or currently have location services set to “always on,” and/or have a HomeBase set within the app will receive the test drill.
